General Tips
- Always call a certified electrician to do any wiring in your home.
- Always use ladders on stable surfaces; have someone hold it if possible.
Outlets, Switches, and Panels
- Install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) on all outlets located outdoors, in bathrooms, kitchens, and all wet areas.
- Avoid overloading outlets. If the appliance has a high wattage, use one receptacle outlet at a time. Have a qualified electrician install additional circuits or outlets to minimize the use of extension cords.
- Call a qualified electrician if outlets or switches feel warm or you have frequent problems with breakers tripping or flickering or dimming lights.
Cords, Plugs and Extension Cords
- When disconnecting an electrical device pull the plug, not the cord.
- Never remove a plug with wet hands.
- For ideal safety, use only three-pronged extension cords; the third prong of a plug exists for safety reasons. Do not break it off or bypass it.
- Always use extension cords that are properly rated for the amount of electricity you will be using. Extension cords are intended for temporary use; if you need a permanent solution, call an electrician.
- Keep cords away from sources of heat and water.
- If cords and plugs show signs of wear or damage, replace them immediately.
Electrical Devices and Appliances
- Unplug your electrical gadgets when they’re not in use.
- Keep your electrical devices away from sources of water.
- Have your dryer serviced at least once a year to avoid danger of fire.
